St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church in Tabb celebrated their 17th year of twinning with St. Michel, Boucan-Carre, Haiti this year. The parish welcomed Father Michenet DuPortal, from St. Michel, to celebrate the anniversary with it. Haiti committee members Judy and Bob Townsend hosted his stay.

Fr. DuPortal at the Haitian Appreciation Dinner with Committee members and special guests.

While in Tidewater, Fr. DuPortal visited St. Mary’s Star of the Sea School in Hampton and shared stories and songs with the children, translated from French to English courtesy of Haiti committee members Terry and Ginny Johnson. The children had raised funds to sponsor some children in Haiti.

During his visit, Fr. DuPortal also toured Ft. Monroe and enjoyed lunch at The Deadrise and a Kiwanis pig roast, a visit to the Parish Food Pantry and Thrift Shop, a House Church dinner and The Haiti Solidarity Dinner. Members John and Melissa Spiszer hosted a boat tour of Poquoson.

The dinner was held in appreciation to all members and sponsors who sponsored the 5K Run/ Walk with the Son for Haiti which takes place the first week of December. All proceeds benefit the education of the children at St. Michel. Since the beginning of the program, the number of students from both schools has increased from around 350 to close to 1500. In fiscal year 2016, the ministry sponsored 343 students (273 primary and 70 secondary).

At the Haitian dinner, prepared by committee members and served by members of the youth group, Fr. DuPortal expressed sincere appreciation on behalf of the people of Haiti. He presented a plaque in appreciation of St. Kateri Tekakwitha’s Haiti ministry. To learn more about the Haiti sponsorship visit
