My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As we prepare to celebrate the passion, death, and resurrection of our Savior, Jesus Christ, I am reminded of the millions of people throughout the world who are also preparing to commemorate the Paschal mysteries. I am also reminded of the many freedoms we enjoy in this country, especially the freedom to worship. As we thank God for these blessings, let us also support one another in our common, universal faith. We place our hope in Christ who frees us from sin and spiritual death.

In the Diocese of Richmond, we are in a time of transition. In a few days, I will reach the age limit for a Bishop and I will offer my resignation to our Holy Father, Pope Francis. The work of the Diocese and Parishes will continue without interruption. Our accomplishments over the past thirteen years, which are many and notable, will be summarized for the benefit of a new Bishop.

I will continue serving as Bishop, with the help of God’s grace, until Pope Francis appoints another Bishop. I ask for your prayers throughout this time of transition. It has been my profound privilege to serve as your Bishop. I am deeply grateful to you, the clergy and lay faithful, and I am satisfied knowing we did our best work together for the greater good of the Church we serve. I look forward to retiring here in Richmond and will help out in parishes where I am needed.

During this holy season of Easter, be assured of my prayers and gratitude. Thank you for all your kindness to me through the years. I hope to see you around the Diocese. God bless you and your families with Easter joy.

Sincerely yours in Our Lord,

Most Rev. Francis X. DiLorenzo
Bishop of Richmond
