19 men to be ordained permanent deacons

Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo will ordain 19 men to the permanent diaconate for the Diocese of Richmond on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 10:30 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond.

All have been in formation for the past four years since the fall of 2009 and have been involved in ministry in their respective parishes. They have met for all-day classes at the Pastoral Center one Saturday a month. In addition, they attended pastoral and spiritual workshops on the Friday night preceding the Saturday classes which were under the auspices of St. Leo University.

On-line study and group reflections among the candidates were also part of the formation process.

In the Catholic Church, the diaconate is the first of three ranks in ordained ministry. Deacons preparing for the priesthood are transitional deacons.

Those not planning to be ordained priests are called permanent deacons. They may be married or single men, but married men who are ordained permanent deacons are expected not to remarry if their wife dies. Their ministry is to the diocese and they are assigned to ministry in a parish or wherever the bishop has a special need. Hence a deacon could conceivably serve in a parish other than his own or be assigned to a specific ministry outside of parish ministry.
