TIO concert

The Tidewater Intergenerational Orchestra (TIO) will present a concert on Saturday, May 5, at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 3316 Sandra Lane in the Sherry Park neighborhood of Virginia Beach. The selections will be “mainly Mozart with a touch of Vivaldi” and will include soloists on French horn, clarinet, violin, piano and oboe. Admission is free.

Combined school band concert

The combined concert bands of Blessed Sacrament Huguenot School in Powhatan and Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Benedict and St. Mary’s Catholic Schools will have a combined concert on Tuesday, May 8, at 7 p.m. in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church Parish Hall at 9505 Gayton Road, Richmond. These bands are directed by Don Crafton, graduate of The Catholic University of America and The Manhattan School of Music. The concert is free and open to the public.

School carnival

St. Matthew’s Catholic School in Virginia Beach will hold its annual spring carnival Friday and Saturday, May 11-12, from 5 to 10 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday. This year’s theme is the “Beach”! There will be rides, games, food, prizes, drinks, White Elephant booth, special vendors, Dunk Tank and special performance by The Rondels from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 12. Admission is free. Proceeds will benefit the students of St. Matthew’s.

shortakes submission informationHealing Mass

St. Mary’s Church, 9505 Gayton Road, Richmond, will have a Healing Mass with Sacrament of Anointing on Saturday, May 12, at 11 a.m. Father Michael Renninger, pastor, will preside. All are invited to join our parish community for Mass and lunch in the parish commons following Mass. Those who wish to join us for lunch should RSVP to St. Mary’s Parish Office, 804-740-4044.

‘Be a Witness’

The diocesan Office for Black Catholics will sponsor a conference May 18-19 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 3300 R Street, Richmond, featuring Deacon Alex Jones of Detroit. Deacon Alex has been preaching the gospel nationwide and invites us to be a part of a two-day spiritual journey. Bishop Martin D. Holley of Washington will give the opening address.
