World Day of Peace Mass Dec. 31 in Richmond
Bishop Emeritus Walter F. Sullivan will preside at the annual World Day of Peace Mass to be held on Saturday, Dec. 31, at 6:30 p.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, at 8th and Grace Streets in Richmond.
The St. Elizabeth’s Choir and others from Pax Christi Richmond will be among those worshipping.
This year’s World Day of Peace theme is “Educating Young People in Justice and Peace.”
Light refreshments and fellowship will follow the Mass.

Cathedral concert set Jan. 15
Father Michael Renninger, pastor of St. Mary Parish, Richmond, will sing with soprano Anne O’Byrne at a free concert at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart on Sunday, Jan. 15, at 2 p.m.
They will be accompanied by Patrick Carlin, music director at the Cathedral.
The one-hour concert will feature music by Saint-Saens, Brahms, Verdi, Berlioz, and others.
In a second concert in February, trumpeter Michael Davison, flutist Anthony Smith, vocal soloist Michele Orr, and organist-pianist Patrick Carlin will perform in “Music for Weddings and Other Festive Occasions” on Sunday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m., at the Cathedral.

Living Nativity
Children from St. Joseph Catholic School in Petersburg presented the Living Nativity to the Petersburg community Dec. 9, the second Friday of the month which coincides with a monthly promotion of the Old Town area of the city. The program was planned and coordinated by Nancy Allen, music director at the school. Children in grades kindergarten through eighth participated in the reenactment by singing or doing readings from the Gospels. Following the performance, the children went to Old Town to carol for the community.

Basilica anniversary
The Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Norfolk recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of the historic church being designated a Basilica. It is believed to be the only predominantly African American Basilica in the United States. The Knights of Peter Claver and Knights of Columbus lead the procession into Mass serving as Honor Guards. Annual Scroll Vespers
Members of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem in the Richmond Diocese celebrated its Annual Scroll Vespers at St. Benedict Church in Richmond Dec. 4. The Order is a Papal Knighthood of obligation which traces its roots to the First Crusade. Its modern mission is to support the Church in the Holy Land. Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien of Baltimore was named by the Holy Father as Grand Master of the Order and will be moving to Rome. Among the members of the group are Father James Kauffmann, pastor of St. Benedict’s in the top row, and Annette Parsons, Chief Education Administrator of the diocesan Office of Catholic Education, first row, far right.

‘L
Nine students from the Latin Club of Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Catholic School in Powhatan recently joined 1,600 other Latin students for the 58th Virginia Junior Classical League Convention at the Richmond Convention Center. The two-day event provided students with competitions in academics, graphic arts, creative arts, and spirit contests as well as workshops, state elections, a talent show, a dance and a Roman banquet. The club earned first place in the Spirit Contest for small delegations. Wearing yellow t-shirts with the Icarus myth represented, the students added black sun glasses with sun rays and one wing to portray the convention theme, “Dimidium facti qui coepit habet” (He who has begun has the deed half done).
