Clergy appointments

Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo has made the following clergy appointment, effective immediately:

  • Father Michael Renninger is appointed Pastor of St. Mary’s Parish in Richmond. He will continue, in the interim, to serve as the Vocations Director until the Bishop names his successor.

  • Msgr. Raymond Barton has resigned as Vicar for Ecumenism and Interreligious Affairs. He will continue as pastor of St. Nicholas Parish, Virginia Beach.

Mary Kauffmann, priest’s mother, dies at 97

Mary Lotz Kauffmann, the mother of Father James Kauffmann, pastor of St. Benedict Parish, Richmond, died Feb. 1. She was 97 and had been a resident of St. Joseph’s Home of the Little Sisters of the Poor.

In addition to Father Kauffmann, Mrs. Kauffmann is survived by two other sons, Richard X. Kauffmann, Jr. and Vincent Paul Kauffmann, both of Atlanta, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was pre-deceased by her husband, Richard X. Kauffmann, Sr. and his sister, Mary Kauffmann, who had been the organist at St. Peter Church in Richmond for more than 50 years.

There will be visitation at St. Benedict Church on Friday, Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m. with Vespers at 7:30 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Feb. 13, at 11 a.m. at St. Benedict Church, followed by burial at Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Sr. Rose Taaffe, who taught in 2 Norfolk schools, dies

Daughter of Wisdom Sister Rose Taaffe, a former teacher at two Catholic schools in Norfolk, died Jan. 26 in Brentwood, NY. She was 89.

Born in New York City, she entered the Daughters of Wisdom in 1954, made her profession of vows in 1955, and took the religious name, Sister Mary William of the Sacred Heart.

Sister Rose taught at St. Mary’s Academy, Norfolk, (1956-1958) and at Norfolk Catholic High School, Norfolk, (1958-1962). She later spent many years of ministry in the New York area.

In 2007, because of failing health, she moved to Maria Regina Residence, Brentwood, New York, where she resided at the time of her death.

Sr. Grace Martin dies; SCN for 70 years

Sister Grace Miriam Martin, a native of Richmond who had been a member of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth for 70 years, died Jan. 15 at Nazareth Home in Louisville, Ky. She was 90.

Sister served in both health care and education for 60 years in Kentucky and Tennessee. In retirement she served in the apostolate of prayer.

Confirmation Summit rescheduled due to snow

The diocesan Office of Youth Ministry has rescheduled the Confirmation Summit that was previously scheduled in Richmond on February 2.

Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo requests the attendance of all pastors, catechetical leaders, youth ministers, confirmation coordinators, and Catholic school religion coordinators and campus ministers at one of the Confirmation Summits to be held on Tuesday, Feb. 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Michael in Glen Allen OR Saturday, March 13, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Charlottesville (location to be announced).

All participants must RSVP. Those who registered for a session previously must RSVP again. Please direct all RSVPs and questions to ym@richmonddiocese.org or call 804-622-5112.

Bp. DiLorenzo to say Scouting Mass

Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo will celebrate a special Mass honoring Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts on Sunday, March 14, at 2:30 p.m. at St. Bede Catholic Church in Williamsburg.

The Diocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting is inviting all Scouts to a celebration of the 100th anniversary of Boy Scouting and 98th anniversary of Girl Scouting in the United States.

During this celebration all Catholic Scouts will be recognized as well as individuals who have received religious awards during the 2009 - 2010 year.

To encourage participation in the western part of the diocese, plans for a similar celebration are underway for the same date in the Roanoke/Blacksburg area.

In order to receive a religious award during this special celebration, completed applications must be sent to the Diocesan office of Youth Ministry with a postmark of March 1. Please RSVP and direct questions to Laura Fields at scouting@richmonddiocese.org or call 804-622-5112.

Youth workers retreat set Feb. 19-20

The diocesan Office of Youth Ministry is sponsoring a weekend retreat for adults who work with high school or middle school youth on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 19-20, at Roslyn Retreat Center in Richmond.

Robert Feduccia, who previously began work in youth ministry in Newport News and now lives in Portland, OR, will lead the retreat which will focus on the season of Lent. He was the founding director of the Youth Liturgical Leadership Program at St. Meinrad School of Theology.

There are two options for participants who can come for only one of the two days, both of which start at 9 a.m. and end at 7 p.m. The first option is a two-day retreat beginning Friday at 9 a.m. with all meals and lodging Friday night included for a cost of $130 for double occupancy or $155 for single occupancy.

The second option is to choose either Friday or Saturday with lunch and dinner provided for a cost of $75.

Financial aid and payment plans are available. Those interested should contact the Office of Youth Ministry.

“The cost should not prohibit anyone from attending this event,” said Mike School, diocesan director of Youth Ministry.

Catholic social teaching theme of March 6 seminar

“Catholic Social Teaching: A Day of Learning, Reflecting, and Transformation” is the theme of a seminar on Saturday, March 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Diocese of Richmond Pastoral Center.

Presenters will be Robert Nalewajek, president of Centisimus Annus Pro Pontific (CAPP) USA, and Dr. Karen Wright, director of the Catholic University of America CST Certificate Program.

CAPP is a laity-led pontifical foundation established by Pope John Paul II headquartered at the Vatican and is a vehicle for education and evangelization of Catholic social doctrine.
