Dearest Brothers and Sisters of the Hispanic Community:
This is an important year for everyone living in the United States. On April 1, 2010 our nation will be completing the “Census 2010,” a national count that takes place every ten years. Along with my brother bishops in the United States, I urge you to participate in this process that is so important for our community.
The 2010 Census has only ten questions and takes about 10 minutes to complete. The National Census Bureau guara ntees that the process is simple, important and confidential. Census workers are legally obligated to keep census records confidential for 72 years. The questionnaire does not request a social security number, place of employment, or information related to your bank account.
Your participation in the Census 2010 will allow for the Hispanic Community to be recognized and attain critical services and projects. For example, the national government will designate up to $400 billion dollars per year (up to $26,000 per person counted) for the construction of hospitals, roads and schools. The Census will also apportion a more accurate number of members of the U.S. House of Representatives.
The Catholic Church has historically played an indispensable role in lifting up newcomers and helping them integrate into their new homeland. Your participation in promoting the Census 2010 will greatly assist our communities through the active civic participation and transformation of your new country into a society that uplifts all of its residents.
Thank you in advance for your participation. May the Good Lord continue to bless you and your families during this Lenten Season.
