Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo has announced the following clergy appointment effective immediately:
-
Deacon Frederick Scarletto, from the Diocese of Youngstown, Ohio, will be assigned as permanent deacon at St. Thomas More in Lynchburg where he is also the Director of Religious Education.

Deacon Ordination
Deacon Jonathan Goertz, left, stands with Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo and Father Michael Renninger director of Vocation, after his ordination to the transitional diaconate April 18 at St. Joan of Arc Church in Yorktown. The College of William and Mary graduate expects to be ordained a priest for the Diocese of Richmond in the spring of 2010 after he completes theology studies at St. Mary’s seminary in Baltimore.

Students give to Rice Bowl
Students at St. Mary Star of the Sea School in Hampton were challenged during Lent to give their own money to the Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl contest. The school’s 185 students ended up raising more than $2,200 for CRS. The two winning classes, the 3rd and 7th grades, will soon enjoy a pizza party. In the photo, taken on the convent grounds on Mill Creek across from Fort Monroe, are students from the pre-K through 8th grades with Dominican Sister Andrea Marie, principal, holding the school banner.

Educators honored
Principals, teachers and Catholic school personnel who are retiring at the end of the school year and those who celebrated significant years of service received special recognition at a luncheon at the Diocesan Pastoral Center April 24. Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo, who attended the luncheon, commended the educators for their years of dedicated service. Msgr. Mark Richard Lane, Vicar for Clergy, gave each of them a certificate.
