Choral concert

The Xavier University Concert Choir with Dr. Thomas Merrill, conductor, from Cincinnati, will be in concert on Wednesday, January 7, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Benedict Church, 300 N. Sheppard St., Richmond. Admission is free. Music selections will include works by Bernstein, Whitacre, Ives, Ravel, Britten and others.

Anti-torture protest

The Tidewater Sowers of Justice Globalization Group, which is seeking to ban all uses of torture, will view the film, “Breaking the Silence” in which Torture Survivors Speak Out Against Torture, on Sunday, January 11, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1279 Great Neck Rd., Virginia Beach. It is open to people of all faiths to encourage further support of the National Religious Campaign Against Torture and the Ban Torture Campaign. ‘Welcome Home’ series

The Parish Community of St. Joan of Arc in Yorktown will offer a “Welcome Home” program for Catholics interested in returning to the practice of their faith. The program consists of six informational sessions held on consecutive Tuesday evenings at the church located on Route 17 in York County. The first session is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. There is no cost or obligation. For further information, contact the church office at 757–898–5570.

Cathedral concerts

Baritone Father Michael Renninger and soprano Anne O’Byrne, accompanied by Dr. Patrick Carlin, minister of music at the Cathedral, will present a free one-hour concert of music by Mozart, Massenet, and others on Sunday, January 18, at 2 p.m., at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.

Trumpeter Michael Davison, mezzo soprano Deborah D. Lynch, and organist-pianist Patrick Carlin will present a free one-hour concert of “Music for Weddings and Other Festive Occasions” on Sunday, February 15, at 2 p.m. at the Cathedral.
