Fuel and Hunger Fund grants total $94,570

The diocesan Fuel and Hunger Fund which provides grants to non-profit agencies and parish programs which give assistance to the poor during the winter months has made a total of $94,570 in grants to programs in all 12 regions of the diocese.

Region 10, which covers the far southwestern counties of Virginia, received the largest amount of aid — $19,500 for 16 agencies and/or parishes.

Among those receiving grants were Bristol Faith in Action, the Tazewell Ministerial Association, the Center for Christian Action in Pocahontas and St. Anthony’s Neighborhood Aid in Norton. Parishes which received grants were Holy Spirit, Jonesville; St. Bernard’s, Gate City; St. Joseph’s, Tazewell; St. Therese’s, St. Paul, and St. Mary’s, Wytheville.

Region 7, which covers the Richmond area and includes Caroline County to the north, received a total of $16,400 for 16 agencies and/or programs.

These agencies included Freedom House of Richmond, Richmond Refugee and Immigration Services, Caroline County Meal Program in Ruther Glen and Hen Pantry of St. John Neumann, Powhatan.

Other regions and their total number of grants were:

  • Region 1 — $7,000 for five programs, including the three parishes of Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Blessed Sacrament and Holy Trinity, all of Norfolk.

  • Region 2 — $5,000 for Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia and the three Virginia Beach parishes of Holy Family, St. Mark and St. Nicholas.

  • Region 3 — $4,500 for three programs, including OASIS Social Ministry of Portsmouth.

  • Region 4 — $9,750 for eight programs, including Hampton Roads Refugee and Immigration Services, and the parishes of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St. Vincent’s Social Action Center, both of Newport News, and St. Rose of Lima, Hampton.

  • Region 5 — $7,170 for seven programs, including the parishes of Sacred Heart, Prince George; Good Shepherd, South Hill; St. Catherine of Siena, Clarksville; St. James, Hopewell, and St. Joseph’s, Petersburg.

  • Region 6 — $3,250 for four programs, including St. Francis of Assisi, Amherst; St. Theresa’s, Farmville, and Ss. Peter and Paul, Palmyra.

  • Region 8 — $3,500 for three programs, including Blessed Sacrament parish, Harrisonburg; SACRA of Staunton, and Rockbridge Area Relief Association of Lexington.

  • Region 9 — $9,250 for seven programs, including Botetourt Resource Center/Faith in Action, Buchanan; Clifton Forge Food Pantry; Roanoke Refugee and Immigration Services, and Holy Family parish in Pearisburg.

  • Region 11 — $5,250 for six programs, including DAWN (Donation-A-Week Neighbor) of Alta Vista; God’s Storehouse in Danville; Helping Hands of Franklin County, Rocky Mount, and Meals on Wheels of Greater Lynchburg.

  • Region 12 — $4,000 for four programs, including Migrant Farmworker Ministry, Accomac; Northampton Social Ministry, Eastville, and the parishes of St. Andrew the Apostle, Chincoteague, and St. Peter the Apostle, Onley.
