LARCUM eventOn Wednesday, January 23, at 7:00 p.m. the Rev. Linda Rainy, Presbyterian Chaplain of Old Dominion University, will speak at Church of the Holy Apostles, Virginia Beach. Her topic will be “The Importance of Ecumenism” as part of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
Jubilee House retreats“Bridges to Contemplative Living with Thomas Merton” is a new group which will meet the fourth Monday at Jubilee House Retreat Center in Abingdon from 7 to 9 p.m. A retreat on the Gospel of Matthew will be held on Jan. 24 from 4 to 9 p.m. Father David Valtierra will be the facilitator. The suggested donation is $20. A Leap Year Weekend Retreat will be held Feb. 29 to March 2. It will be facilitated by Annette Dukes and will focus on the spring time growth and renewal in the Lenten season of fasting and feasting. Young artists recitalThe Saint Thomas Aquinas Concert Series of Saint Thomas Aquinas Church in Charlotttesville will hold a Young Artists Recital on Friday, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m. at the church, 401 Alderman Rd. The recital will feature many local young artists performing classical music for organ, piano, voice, clarinet, and violin including works by Mendelssohn, J.S. Bach, F.W. Ferling, Gabriel Faurè, and others. The concert is free but donations are accepted. A reception will follow the recital. PCHS Open HousePeninsula Catholic High School, Newport News, will hold an Admissions Open House for prospective students and their families for the 2008–2009 school year on Sunday, January 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. The program will provide an opportunity to see our facilities, meet our students and staff, tour our school, learn about our academic, athletic and co-curricular offers, and get a glimpse into what the “PC Experience” is all about. The school is located at 600 Harpersville Road in Newport News and serves students in grades 8 through 12. All incoming ninth grade students will be required to take the Scholastic Testing Services High School Placement Test (HSPT) on either Saturday, February 9, or Saturday, February 23, from 8:30 to 11: 30 a.m. at PCHS. Choir FestivalAn Ecumenical Choir Festival at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 712 Little Neck Road, Virginia Beach, will be held Sunday, Jan. 27, at 4 p.m. The choirs of St. Nicholas Catholic, Lynnhaven United Methodist, St. Aidan’s Episcopal, Kings Grant Baptist, and Kings Grant Presybterian Churches will present their biennial concert of sacred choral and bell music accompanied by brass, timpani, handbells, piano, and organ. Each choir will present a selection, then the combined singers (around 200) will sing compositions by Ralph Vaughn Williams and Felix Mendelssohn, a spiritual, and a contemporary setting of Psalm 98. The guest conductor is Dr. David Clayton, choral director at Virginia Wesleyan College in Virginia Beach. Congregational hymn singing accompanied by brass, timpani, organ and piano is interspersed with the choral selections. St. Gertrude toursSaint Gertrude High School in Richmond is hosting Tuesdays at Twelve on January 29 and February 5 for prospective families to tour the school, visit classes, and meet faculty, students and parents. Gathering of WomenAll women of the Diocese are invited to an evening of fellowship, reflection and dinner on Monday, Feb. 4, at Immaculate Conception Church, 2170 Cunningham Drive, Hampton, beginning at 6 p.m. Jennifer J. Del Corso will present “Even Jesus Rested: a guide for reducing compassion fatigue.” Dinner will be at 6:30, followed by the presentation at 7:15. Tickets are $15 and can be obtained by enclosing a check made out to ICCW and mailed to Juanita Hartman, 206 Greenwell Drive, Hampton, Va. 23666. Concert of supportA concert to support the seminarians of the diocese featuring Father Michael Renninger, Vicar for Vocations, baritone; Jonathan Nichols, tenor, and Carey Bliley at the piano, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 7:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish, Newport News. Tickets are $15 with all proceeds going to support future priests.
