Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo holds his own personal copy of a commemorative book of the diocese’s Filipino Pilgrimage held last July at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. The book, which features many photographs from the event, speaks about the many facets of Filipino Catholicism and has information on Filipino clergy, unique spiritual events from the Philippines and church architecture in that country. With him at the presentation of the book are, from left, Geraldine Seibert, of Our Lady of Lourdes, Richmond; Rosario Igharas, also of Our Lady of Lourdes, Richmond, and a member of the diocesan Filipino Commission; Dr. Emmanuel Eugenio, a pediatrician from Redeemer parish, Mechanicsville, who chairs the Commission, and Dawn Crutchfield, interim director of the diocesan Office of Asian Ministry.

Fr. Augustine Ludwig, OSB, dies

Father Augustine W. Ludwig, O.S.B., a Benedictine monk of Mary Mother of the Church Abbey in Richmond, died December 30 at the age of 77.

Father Augustine was born to August and Mildred Ludwig on September 5, 1930, in Rock Island, Illinois. He took his vows as a Benedictine monk on February 22, 1983, and was ordained to the priesthood on June 5, 1987.

He served at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Richmond from 1988 to 1989, as headmaster of Benedictine High School from 1989 to 1993 and was appointed Subprior and Master of Novices for the Abbey in 1994.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated January 4 in the Chapel at Mary Mother of the Church Abbey on River Road. Burial followed in the Abbey’s cemetery.

Students of St. John Neumann Academy in Blacksburg gathered for a Feast Day celebration of the school’s namesake on Jan. 4 to celebrate their 5th year of operation. Father Ken Shuping, pastor of St. Jude parish in Radford was the celebrant. Two 1st grade students, Riley Bloomer and Meigs Helms, hold pictures they colored of St. John Neumann. They, along with their 1st grade and kindergarten classmates shared facts about St. John Neumann’s life with the rest of the school.

Sister Gertrude Mueller, a member of the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia who most recently was administrative assistant at St. Bridget parish in Richmond, died December 24. She was 81 and had cancer.

Born in Chester, Illinois on April 23, 1926, Sister Gertrude became a member of the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia in 1948. From 1952 until 1987 she was a teacher and principal in several schools throughout Virginia, including St. Leo, Fairfax, St. John, Warrenton, and Linton Hall in the Diocese of Arlington and Sacred Heart, St. Paul and Saint Gertrude High School in the Diocese of Richmond.

For the past 14 years Sister Gertrude was an administrative assistant at St. Bridget’s Parish in Richmond.

Sister Gertrude had been involved in the RCIA program at Cathedral parish in Richmond for several years. She was an ardent student of scripture and theology all her life.

Sister Gertrude is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Maxine Mills of Floral City, Florida, and the 33 members of her Benedictine community.

Msgr. Thomas Miller presided at Mass of Christian Burial at St. Benedict Monastery in Bristow on December 27 with burial in the Sisters’ cemetery.

A memorial Mass for Sister Gertrude will be held at St. Bridget Church, Richmond, on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m.
