The new All Saints Catholic Church in Floyd was dedicated by Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo June 7. In the photo Bob Schmitt, the oldest parishioner, standing in the pews, describes the early history of the mission parish when families would gather in homes for Mass celebrated by visiting priests. On the altar are, from left, Father Claude Franklin, pastor of St. Elias Maronite Church, Roanoke; Bishop DiLorenzo, Deacon Nicholas Mammi and Father Charles Brickner, pastor, standing. The Floyd parish, a mission of St. Joseph’s in Woodlawn, has 23 families. Floyd, the seat of rural Floyd County, is 40 miles southwest of Roanoke. Established in 1973, All Saints parish previously gathered for the weekly Sunday vigil Mass on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church. In addition to the parishes of All Saints and St. Joseph’s, Father Brickner is pastor of Risen Lord parish in Patrick Springs.

Clergy appointments

Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo has announced the following clergy appointments, effective as noted:

  • Rev. Piotr Bialkowski has been appointed administrator of Good Shepherd, Smithfield, effective July 1. He will continue as administrator at St. Mary of Presentation in Suffolk.

  • Rev. Jack Smyth, C.Ss.R. (Redemptorist) has been assigned to the Holy Family Retreat House, Hampton, effective immediately.

  • Rev. James Geiger, C.Ss.R. (Redemptorist) has been assigned to the Holy Family Retreat House, Hampton, effective July 31.

  • Rev. Daniel Carboy, C.Ss.R. (Redemptorist) has been assigned as parochial vicar to both St. Joseph Church, Hampton, and St. Mary Star of the Sea, Fort Monroe, effective July 31.

  • Rev. Peter Sousa, C.Ss.R. (Redemptorist) has been assigned as pastor to both St. Joseph Church, Hampton, and St. Mary Star of the Sea, effective July 31. He will succeed Father Anthony Morris who will begin a sabbatical.

William A. Roy, Jr., a senior at Holy Cross Regional Catholic School in Lynchburg, places a crown of flowers on Mother Mary, as Deacon Gordon Cartwright looks on. The youth designed and built this Grotto and Garden at the Tabor Retreat Center during the spring 2008 as part of an Eagle Scout Service Project. The project involved 160 man-hours, 15 volunteers, and numerous fundraising donations. Billy belongs to Eagle Scout Troop 180, part of the Piedmont District of the Blue Ridge Mountains Council.

Bishop Emeritus Walter F. Sullivan, seated at right, dedicated the new bench at the entrance of the M.E. Cox Center for Elder Day Care in Virginia Beach June 19. The bench recognizes the contributions of the late MaryEllen Cox, who was a longtime advocate for seniors and their recognition by the wider community. Seated on the bench with Bishop Sullivan is Connie Splan, of St. Bede’s, Williamsburg, acting chair of the diocese’s Commission for Older Adults. Behind them are members of the commission. Ms. Cox, who served as coordinator of the diocese’s Older Adult Ministry, also served on several diocesan boards including the Diocesan Housing Commission and The Catholic Virginian. Bishop Sullivan credits Ms. Cox with influencing him on the importance of support services and ministry for older adults when he served as the bishop of the Diocese of Richmond from 1974 to 2003.

They received their certificates June 10 as part of the Knights of Columbus Awards Nite and Pizza Social.
