K of C celebration

Knights of Columbus Fr. Nicholas J. Habets Council 4632 is celebrating its 50th Anniversary with a Hawaiian themed Casino Night/Silent Auction on Sunday June 1, from 3 to 9 p.m. at the Council Hall on 1236 Prosperity Rd. in Virginia Beach. Silent Auction proceeds will benefit the Special Olympics of Virginia. Tickets are $10.

To continue the 50th Anniversary Celebration, Council 4632 is hosting a semi-formal dinner on Saturday June 7, at the Council Hall with cocktails starting at 6 p.m. and dinner served at 7. ‘The Sound of Music’

The Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “The Sound of Music” will be presented by St. Edward’s Music Ministry on Friday through Sunday, June 6 and 8, at St. Edward Church in Richmond, with all performances at 7 p.m.

It will be directed by Frank Tortorella with musical direction by Richard Barnett. Advance Ticket Prices are:

  • General Seating—$10

  • Senior Citizens—$8

  • Children 12 and under—$5

  • Bleacher Seating— $6, Senior Citizens—$5

  • Children 12 and under—$4.

Tickets will be sold at the door for an additional $2 per ticket. To order tickets, call 804–272–2948.

The Well retreat

A retreat will be given by Dr. Grace Brame June 13–15 at The Well Retreat Center in Smithfield. Dr. Grace will help participants experience forgiveness of others, ourselves, and God. In Guided Receptive Prayer, they will name our pain and will allow themselves to rest in the Holy Presence, to see both beauty and need in ourselves and those who have caused hurt. Organ concert

Organ works featuring Emily Sensenbach-Gopal, an alumna of Westminster Choir College, will be held Friday, June 13, at 8 p.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, serving the University of Virginia, 401 Alderman Rd., Charlottesville. She will be performing works by Buxtehude, Böhm, Mendelssohn, David Conte, and others.

Rummage sale

A rummage sale will be held at St. Mary’s Church, 9505 Gayton Rd., Richmond, on Saturday, June 14, from 8 a.m. until 12 noon in the Parish Hall. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Human Concerns Ministry.

Donations of gently used items are needed, including toys, house wares, books, clothing, linens, sporting goods, jewelry, furniture and baby items. They will be accepted in the Parish Hall on Thursday, June 12, from noon until 8 p.m. and on Friday, June 13, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Tidewater LARCUM

The Annual Tidewater LARCUM (Lutheran/Anglican/Roman Catholic/Methodist) Conference will take place on Monday, June 30, 2008 at 7 p.m. (registration at 6:30 p.m.) at the Church of the Holy Apostles, 1593 Lynnhaven Parkway, Virginia Beach.

This year’s presentation, “Sharing our Faith with the Greek Orthodox Tradition,” will be given by Father James Pavlow, pastor of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Virginia Beach.

Haiti Benefit Concert

On Tuesday, June 24 at 7 p.m. Lisa Burrell, a violinist and faculty member at Sam Houston University, and Linda Blondel, a pianist for the Charlottesville Symphony, will be returning to Church of the Redeemer (Mechanicsville) to perform a recital to benefit teacher education in Haiti. The duo will perform works by Mozart, Beethoven and others. Joining them will be Teresa Henrichs, a violist from Richmond, and Cindy Jennings, Redeemer’s Minister of Music, who will be playing the harp. The recital is free and open to the parish and public. Donations will be gratefully accepted to benefit teacher education at the school in Lascahobas that is run by the peasant women’s organization (Association Femmes Actives Lascahobas) with whom Redeemer is twinned.
