Christ the King School, Norfolk, wins national science award
Students collecting water samples for analysis may not be an unusual project. But a class of second graders confidently using sophisticated scientific equipment and integrating high-tech media elements into the project certainly is.
Second-grade students at Christ the King Catholic School in Norfolk, in cooperation with Old Dominion University’s Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography Department, took a water sampling project from the field, through the lab, and to the broadcast studio.
As a result of this project, Christ the King School has been named the recipient of the 2008 Catholic Schools for Tomorrow Award from Today’s Catholic Teacher Magazine.
Christ The King received the award in the area of “Innovative projects facilitated by Technology”.
Celtic celebration
Dancers were part of the annual Celtic Mass and celebration of the feast day of St. Patrick, a joint effort of the Knights of Columbus #11264 and Ladies of St. Rose from St. Rose of Lima, Hampton, and the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary #362 from St. Vincent de Paul, Newport News, to benefit the Little Sisters of the Poor. The celebration included children from the St. Mary Star of the Sea School of Dance program as they performed their first “recital” for their parents, family and friends. Other performances included the St. Mary Star of the Sea Irish Dancers, Rhythm of Ireland School of Irish Dance, and the Richmond Adult Ceili Dancing Team. A traditional Irish dinner was served.
