U.S. Cardinal John P. Foley receives the red biretta

U.S. Cardinal John P. Foley receives the red biretta from Pope Benedict XVI during the consistory in St. Peter’s Basilica Nov. 24 at the Vatican. The pope elevated 23 churchmen from around the world to the rank of cardinal. Cardinal Foley, ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, is the former editor of The Catholic Standard and Times, official Catholic newspaper of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. He also had served on the faculty of St. Charles Borromeo Seminary where Richmond Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo once served as rector. Cardinal Foley is more recently serving as president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications which has its headquarters at the Vatican.

Father Patrick Golden acknowledges applause from the congregation after he was installed as new rector of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Nov. 18 by Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo. The installation ceremony came at the same liturgy at which the Cathedral ended the formal celebration of its Centennial. Father Golden, a native of Lynchburg, was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Richmond in 1996. His previous assignment was as pastor of St. Jude parish in Radford.
