Adoption orientation

Commonwealth Catholic Charities of Richmond will host a free orientation regarding domestic infant and international adoption on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the agency’s Southside office, 203 Twinridge Lane. Haiti documentary

Roanoke College campus group SAGE (Social Awareness Group for Everyone) will host a documentary “Haiti: We Must Kill the Bandits” on Tuesday, November 27, at 8 p.m. in Massengill Auditorium. The documentary was produced by noted journalist and filmmaker Kevin Pina who has lived in Haiti since 1995. The title derives from a quote by Edmund Mulet, Special Envoy to UN MINUSTAH troops currently occupying Haiti.

This event is being co-sponsored by Pax Christi Virginia and Plowshare Peace Center of Roanoke. Bob DellaValle-Rauth, Coordinator of Pax Christi Virginia, long-time missioner and advocate for the people of Haiti, will facilitate a discussion following the viewing.This film covers the coup period from 2004 through 2006 and documents atrocities against the people carried out by the coup government, much of which has gone unreported in the mainstream US press. It is open to the public free of admission charge.

Peninsula Catholic

Peninsula Catholic High School in Newport News will hold an Admissions Open House for prospective students and their families on Wednesday, Nov. 28, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The program will provide an opportunity to meet students and staff, tour our school, learn about the school’s academic, athletic and co-curricular offerings, and get a glimpse into what the “PC Experience” is all about. Fair Trade crafts

Our Lady of Nazareth parish in Roanoke is having a Fair Trade Craft Sale on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Purchases will help support 90 community-based organizations in 34 countries, creating economic opportunity so artisians and farmers can support their families.

Santa Breakfast

A breakfast with Santa will be held Saturday, Dec. 1, from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary of the Annunciation Church, Ladysmith. The breakfast includes scrambled eggs, sausage, pancakes and beverage for $3.

Lessons and Carols

A Service of Lessons and Carols will be held Sunday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m. at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 712 Little Neck Road in Virginia Beach. The choirs will present their annual service of seasonal scripture and song, celebrating the coming of Christ. The service includes assembly singing, choral and instrumental music and lasts about an hour.

Taize Prayer

Our Lady of Lourdes parish in Richmond will host two Taize prayer services during the Advent season. The first will be on Tuesday, Dec. 4, with an Advent theme, while the second on Thursday, Dec. 20, will utilize the traditional “O Antiphons” of the Church’s prayer. Both will begin at 7 p.m. Taize prayer includes meditative song and chant in addition to scripture reading and periods of silence for private prayer and reflection.

Guadalupe celebration

Catholics of the Lynchburg area are invited to participate in the “Virgen de Guadalupe” celebration at Holy Cross Church in Lynchburg on Sunday, Dec. 9, starting with a procession with Mariachis at 1 p.m. and celebration of Mass at 2 p.m. Spanish food will be available after Mass.

Christmas concert

Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in Newport News will hold a Christmas concert by Michael O’Brien at the OLMC Church on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 7:30 p.m.to raise money for our school. Tickets at $10 are being sold in advance or at the door if there are tickets remaining. There will be refreshments and a meet-and-greet session with Mr. O’Brien after the concert.
