Advisory panel for youth ministry formed
With the announcement of Pat Novak’s retirement as associate director of youth ministry, as well as Sister Diane Guy’s transition from director of Campus and Young Adult Ministry to working with the diocesan document “We Walk by Faith,” Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo wants to explore emerging models regarding organizational structure of these two key diocesan roles.
To accomplish this review, Bishop DiLorenzo has invited Father John Grace, Campus Minister at Virginia Tech, to chair an Advisory Panel for the Future of Youth, Campus and Young Adult Ministry.
The Panel is charged with submitting two recommendations to Bishop DiLorenzo. The first recommendation focuses on hiring a new director of campus and young adult ministry. The second recommendation focuses on how best to move forward with organizational structure at the diocesan level for youth ministry.
Diocesan models for youth ministry vary greatly, so the question becomes what reporting structure is best for the Diocese of Richmond?
The following individuals have been selected to assist Father Grace as members of the Advisory Panel:
-
Father Kenneth Wood, vicar for youth and pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish
-
Debbie Gausmann, director of youth ministry, Saint Joan of Arc, Yorktown
-
Maryann Hakowski, pastoral associate, Church of the Holy Spirit, Virginia Beach
-
Leroy Orie, youth minister, Church of the Redeemer, Mechanicsville
-
Nick Stein, VCU campus minister
-
Megan Sorg, James Madison University campus minister
-
Joy Novakowski, chair of the Campus & Young Adult Ministry Commission
-
Andrew Bennett, Young Adult Ministry Committee member.
The members represent multiple levels of youth ministry, exposure to different campus environments and diocesan leadership experiences.
The Advisory Panel will hit the ground running with its first meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Nov 20. It anticipates recommendations to be presented in January.
Through this process, Bishop DiLorenzo looks forward to providing our youth, college students and young adults the very best approach to strengthening their faith and helping them to continue to grow in their love of Our Lord, Jesus.
