What Catholics believe

Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Chesapeake will present a two-session forum to address the tough questions about our Catholic Faith for ourselves and our children with Part I on Friday, Nov. 9, from 7 to 9 p.m., and Part II on Friday, Nov. 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a nursery available. Mystery Dinner Theater

Who Shot The Sheriff?,” a play by Alan Stuart Austin and produced through special arrangement with Murder Ink, will be presented as a Mystery Dinner Theater performance by the St. John Troubadours on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 9–10, at 7 p.m. in the social hall of St. John Catholic Church, 813 W. Nine Mile Rd., Highland Springs. The director is Tish Mondoux. The audience participation is key to the evening’s performance which will coincide with a family style turkey dinner with all the trimmings. Tickets are $25 a couple or $15 for singles. Day of Renewal

New Creation Community will host a Day of Renewal at the Charismatic Renewal Center in Chesapeake on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The three talks were initially given in Detroit at the Amazing Grace Conference earlier this year. The Catholic Woman’s Club will be celebrating their Annual Memorial Mass on Monday, Nov. 12, at 11 a.m. at Mary Mother of the Church Benedictine Abbey, with lunch after Mass. The club is celebrating its 93rd anniversary this year.

Fr. Lane seminars set in November

Father Mark Lane, Vicar for Clergy for the Diocese of Richmond, will be conducting the seminar “The Art of Bosch” on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at St Benedict’s Catholic Church, 300 N. Sheppard St., Richmond at 7 p.m. He will also be presenting “The Necropolis of St. Peter” on Monday, Nov. 19, at Epiphany Catholic Church, 11000 Smoketree Drive, Richmond at 7 p.m. The cost for each is $15.

Jubilee House

The Spirituality of Thomas Merton will be the theme of a retreat Nov. 9–11 at Jubilee House Retreat Center in Abingdon. The weekend will seek to encounter the Trappist monk’s wisdom in word and dialogue and help one become “contemplatives in a world of action.” Sister Kathleen Deignan, CND. is retreat leader. Donation is $110 for overnight, $50 for commuters.

A Mutual Support Workshop will be held Nov. 13–14 to introduce participants to skills and awareness of how to be self-supportive, ask for and receive support and support others. Arts & Environment

An Arts and Environment Workshop at St. Nicholas, 712 Little Neck Road, Virginia Beach, will be presented in two parts on Friday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 17, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. “Beyond the Flowers — Liturgical Environment and Decor” will be the theme.

Friday will feature Taize Evening of Sung Prayer for Peace with music and environment created by St. Nicholas Music Ministry, Arts & Environment teams and Jill Maria Murdy. On Saturday Ms. Murdy, a contributor to Arts & Environment articles in The Sourcebook and Rite magazine, will present sessions on how liturgical environments are created according to scripture, documents, and season. The day will conclude with hands-on activities.

There is a $20 registration fee includes lunch and all workshop materials. The Taize service is open to the public at no charge.

Centennial Ball

The 100th Anniversary of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart will be celebrated with a Centennial Ball, on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. in the Cathedral Parish Hall, 823 Cathedral Place, Richmond. Admission is $15 per person at the door.

‘Bellissima!’ concert

As part of its 2007–2008 Concert Series, Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Norfolk will present “Bellissima!,” a 30-voice women’s chorus performance entitled “The Life & Loves of Women” on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. It is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.

Brunswick stew sale

Members of the Fr. James J. Scanlon Council #6936 Knights of Columbus of St. John’s Church, Highland Springs,will hold their 3rd Annual Brunswick Stew Sale on Saturday Nov. 17. The sale will take place at St. John’s located at 813 West Nine Mile Road in Highland Springs. The sale of brunswick stew will begin at 12 noon and run until the stew is sold out. The cost will be $8 per quart.

Raising kids Catholic

Raising Kids & Grandkids Catholic” will be the theme of two presentations at St. Andrew Church, Roanoke, on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 17–18. Mary Ann Kuharski mother of 13 (6 by adoption), author, speaker and founding member of Pro-Life Across America will give two special presentations on fulfilling our vocation as parents and grandparents. She will speak on Saturday at 7 p.m. on “Raising Catholic Kids with Humor and Prayer in a Secular World” and again on Sunday at 1 p.m. on “Grandparents, Parents and Extended Family — Needed Now More Than Ever.” Child care is available. The program is sponsored by The Gift of Life Committee.

Cathedral Christmas concert

The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart will present its annual free Christmas Concert and Festival on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in commemoration of World AIDS Day. The program will feature the Cathedral Choir, Amy Grant Hruska and Patrick Carlin, directing; vocal soloists Lisa Edwards Burrs and Father Michael Renninger; trumpeter Michael Davison; flute soloists Lauren Serpa and Anthony Smith; and the VCU Trombone Choir, Ross Walter directing.

5K run

The first annual Run With the Son 5K presented by The Center for Metabolic Health will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, at Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Church in Tabb beginning at 8:30 a.m. All proceeds will go to the Education Building Fund. Craft fairs and bazaars

Shopping Night

St. Mary of the Annunciation parish, located at 10306 Ladysmith Rd., in the Caroline County community of Ladysmith will hold Shopping Night with more than 25 crafters and vendors on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 5 to 10 p.m. Babysitting will be provided. Proceeds will benefit the food pantry.

Prize bingo will be held at the church on Saturday, Nov. 17. Doors open at 5 p.m., with games starting at 6 p.m. One can play 16 games for $15. All prizes are worth $15 or more.

Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Palmyra will hold its annual Christmas Craft Fair on Saturday, Nov.10, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The church is located on Rt. 53 in Palmyra. Vendors will have original hand crafted items made by parishioners. There will also be a bake sale and multiple raffles.

St. Edward Craft Fair

St. Edward the Confessor Church, 2700 Dolfield Drive, Richmond, will hold its 7th Annual Holiday Craft & Gift Fair on Saturday, November 17, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There will also be baked goods and a raffle.

Sophomore bazaar

The sophomore class of Saint Gertrude High School, Richmond, will hold its Sophomore Bazaar and Silent Auction on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the school, 3215 Stuart Ave. in the Museum District. There will be freshly smoked barbecue to take home.

Silent aution

On Saturday, Dec. 1, St Mark Church, Virginia Beach, will host its 5th Annual Silent Auction to benefit our children at Maison Fortune Orphanage in Hinche, Haiti.
