Jubilee House

A prayerful retreat for people who enjoy knitting or crocheting will be held at Jubilee House Retreat Center in Abingdon on March 2–3. The donation is $75 for overnight and $45 for commuters. Cathedral concerts

A benefit concert for the VCU Music Scholarship Fund will be presented by the VCU music faculty and students on Sunday, March 4, at 2 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. A free one-hour concert of “Arias from Opera and Operetta” will be presented by vocal soloists of the Cathedral and the VCU Department of Music on Monday, March 12, at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral. Following the concert a free lunch will be served in the parish hall.

Open house

St. John Neumann Academy in Christiansburg will hold an Open House for prospective students and parents on Wednesday, March 7, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The program will provide information about curriculum, student life, and admission procedures. The Passion in Art

Father Mark Richard Lane, Vicar for Clergy, will speak on “The Passion in Art” on Thursday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Benedict Church in Richmond. The cost will be $15.

Jesus was not depicted on the Cross until the fifth century. The lecture will be on the historical context and theological standpoint of each work displayed. The images to be discussed will range from the Passion of Christ in the Catacomb of Domitilla to Mark Chagall’s White Crucifixion.

They will include the Crucifixion Plaque from Metz, Cimabue’s Crucifix, Giotto’s Noli Me Tangere, Piero della Francesca’s Resurrection, the Isenheim Altarpiece and Caravaggio’s Supper at Emmaus among others.

AIDS is topic

A Town Hall Meeting entitled “Out in the Open” with a panel presentation of the impact of HIV/AIDS on the African American family, church and community will be held on Friday, March 9, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Fifth Street Baptist Church, 2800 Third Ave., Richmond. There will be a spaghetti supper from 5:30 to 6:30. A concert and healing service will be held on Saturday, March 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church.

St. Elizabeth Catholic Church and the Catholic Diocese of Richmond are sponsors in the activities which are part of the Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS.

Powhatan VSHL

The Powhatan Chapter of the Virginia Society for Human Life will hold its first Annual “Festival of Life” on Saturday, March 10, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Powhatan High School auditorium. Speakers will include the Rev. Clenard Childress, Jr., author of “No Shepherd’s Cry,” who speaks about abortion and black genocide; Olivia Gans, of National Right to Life, who shares her experience with abortion; Dr. Kelly Hollowell, author of “Struggling for Life (How Your Tax Dollars and Twisted Science Target the Unborn)”; as well as local Powhatan attorney Graham T. Jennings, Jr., who will speak on the misconceptions of the “Living Will” versus the “Will to Live” and Euthanasia, the so-called, “good death.”

Lenten Mission

St. Edward parish in Richmond will have a Lenten Mission beginning Saturday, March 10, and closing Wednesday, March 14. Kathy Coffey, who has taught for 15 years at the University of Colorado, Denver and Regis Jesuit University, will lead the mission. She is an editor of the publication “Living the God News” and is the mother of four. She will speak at Masses during the weekend and each morning Monday through Wednesday at 9:45 on “The Art of Faith.” There will also be an evening presentation Monday through Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. On Wednesday from 6 to 6:30 p.m. there will be a Lenten Supper before the presentation.

Topics of the evening talks are Monday, “The Joy of Sacramentality;” Tuesday, “Eucharist: Links Between Church and Home,” and Wednesday, “The Small “s” Sacraments.”

There is child care each evening, but pre-registration is required. Children’s and middle school youth programs will be provided.

Benefit for Birthright

Birthright of Norfolk, an organization which assists pregnant women in crisis in southeastern Virginia, will sponsor a Charity Bowl 4 on Sunday, March 11, at AMF Indian River Lanes in Virginia Beach. There will be free snacks and plenty of door prizes, along with prizes for the three highest-sponsored bowlers.The entry fee is a minimum donation of $25 per bowler, and sponsorships are encouraged. St. Gregory mission

Life Is Difficult BUT God Is Good!” will be the theme of the upcoming parish mission of St. Gregory the Great in Virginia Beach, beginning Monday, March 12, through Thursday, March 15. The Mission Priest will be Father Scott Seethaler, O.F.M.Cap. There will be Mass each day at 8:30 a.m., followed by a mission presentation. There will also be an evening presentation Monday through Thursday at 7 p.m. The topics are: Monday, “A Christian Response to Stress,” Tuesday, “Celebrating Marriage and Family Life” with programs for children in grades one to five and “God’s Family” led by St. Gregory Youth Group; Wednesday, “The Art of Forgiveness,” and Thursday, “Finding True Happiness.” Child care will be available each evening. The Well Retreat Center

Rest on the Journey: A Centering Prayer Retreat will be given by Father Bill Sheehan, OMI, April 13–15, at The Well Retreat Center in Smithfield. The cost is $150, double occupancy.

The Spiritual Direction Institute at The Well is a 2-yr. course, meeting one Saturday a month, for two years. No classes during summer months. Informational meeting will be held Sunday, March 25, at 2p.m., at The Well Retreat Center. We will discuss requirements, commitment, meeting dates, and class content.

The Well will celebrate its 20th Year Anniversary with an open house, dessert-tea on Sunday, April 22. We are inviting local artists to come and paint and sell their art. A portion of the proceeds will benefit The Well.

Arts in the Glen

St. Michael parish in Richmond is looking for artists and artisans to exhibit at Arts in the Glen, an art and music festival at St. Michael’s which will be held Saturday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will also include children’s crafts for Mother’s Day, food vendors and music.
