SHORTAKES
Health Expo
The Church of the Holy Family in Virginia Beach will have a health expo on Saturday, Feb. 24, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Explore all the different aspects of wellness: mind, body and spirit. There will be demonstrations/classes including Yoga, Reiki, Massage Therapy, Fitness, Pet Therapy, Nutrition, and the AED. Coffee and sample heart healthy snacks will be served at the cooking demonstration. The church is located at 1279 North Great Neck Rd. Child care is provided by our teens. There is no fee but donations will be accepted. All proceeds will benefit the parish’s Haiti ministry.

Open house
There will be an Admissions Open House at Peninsula Catholic High School, 600 Harpersville Rd., Newport News, on Sunday, February 25. For more information, call Eleanor Murphy at the school, 757–596–7247, ext. 11.

Holy Hour for vocations
There will be a holy hour for vocations on Monday, Feb. 26, from 7 to 8 p.m. at St. Benedict Church, Richmond. The rosary will be prayed and Deacon Keith Fournier will give a talk on Catholic faith and life. There will be a social afterwards on the side porch.

The following activities are for people in their late teens, 20s and 30s, single or married:

13,20,27 — Fellowship and Faith Sharing. Tuesdays at An’s house from 7–9 p.m. We will share a potluck meal and then discuss how the Bible relates to issues we face every day. POC: An, 757–593–0020.
15 — Preparing sandwiches for the homeless, Piper Hall, OLMC, 7 p.m. If you can, bring bread and/or peanut butter and/or jelly. POC: Matt 757–342–3834.

Richmond
9–10 — Young Adult Symposium, Saturday, March 10, 2007 from 9:30 a.m.–7:30 p.m., St. Gertrude High School. Fr. John Cusick and Ms. Kate DeVries from the Archdiocese of Chicago are the keynote speakers. We encourage you to send your leadership team, YAM parish staff person, and the YAM representative to the parish council. The program will include liturgy at the Cathedral to celebrate its 100th anniversary.

Yorktown
24 — St. Joan of Arc is hosting the Regional Lenten Day of Reflection, 1 to 5 p.m. Father Mike Joly will lead. Mass at 5:30 followed by fellowship dinner.

Young Scouts Retreat
A Catholic retreat for Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts (Grades K–5) will be held on Saturday, March 10, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 8200 Woodman Rd. Scouts should wear their uniforms and bring a cup of something to put in a trail mix. The cost is $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Pre-registration by units and individuals is recommended as space is limited. St. Gertrude’s
Saint Gertrude High School in Richmond is having two nights of speakers in programs that are free and open to the public. On Thursday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. Virginia’s Poet Laureate, Carolyn Kreiter-Foronda, will read her poetry, discuss her work and sign books. This special evening is made possible in partnership with the Virginia Museum of Fine Art’s Office of Statewide Partnerships. A reception will follow.
On Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. a panel of financial planners, Steve Williams, Ralph Puccinelli and Brian Ford, will address “A Beginner’s Guide to Savings and Investments,” “Tax Savings Techniques” and “Converting Wealth into Income Retirement,” respectively. St. Anselm lecture
Dr. John Cavadini, chair of the Department of Theology at the University of Notre Dame, will give the next lecture of the St. Anselm Institute for Catholic Thought on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 5 p.m. in MacLeod Hall, Room 2014, on the campus of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. His topic will be “Augustine’s City of God and Political Realism.”
