Rosary for vocations
St. Benedict Church in Richmond will have a Holy Hour for vocations on Monday, Jan. 29, from 7 to 8 p.m. It will include praying the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary, Exposition and Benediction of the most Blessed Sacrament, and a reflection on Catholic Faith and Catholic Life by Deacon Keith Fournier. It will conclude with refreshments on the side porch of St. Benedict Catholic Church, 300 North Sheppard Street.

Concert in Norfolk
Blessed Sacrament Church in Norfolk will present Bi-Okoto Drum and Dance Theatre on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. as part of its 2006–2007 concert series. From Cincinnati, Ohio, the group offers a variety of traditional and contemporary Christian praise songs, music and dance from West Africa. The church is located at 6400 Newport Avenue. Admission is free; an offering will be taken.

Choir concert
A Choir Survey of the Church Calendar concert will be presented by the St. Gregory the Great Choir at St. Gregory the Great Church in Virginia Beach on Sunday, February 18, at 3:30 p.m. The choir will perform a sampling repertoire from “Advent to Christ the King.” Admission is free.

Heart’s Home
Heart’s Home, an international Catholic organization committed to promoting a culture of compassion, is currently accepting applications for volunteers. Heart’s Home provides an opportunity for young people to dedicate at least 14 months of their lives to serve the most suffering people in the world. Founded in 1990 by Father Thierry de Roucy, the organization has 35 communities located in 20 countries, in addition to having recruited and trained more than 1,100 missionaries from 18 countries. Just War
”What Makes a War Just? — What Makes Peace Possible?” will be the theme of a Catholic Teaching of War and Peace symposium to be held Saturday, February 3, from 9:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More, 3901 Cathedral Lane, Arlington. Mass will be celebrated earlier at 9 a.m. Jesuit Father John Langan will be the keynote speaker. There will be a panel discussion facilitated by Dolores Leckey, of Woodstock Theological Center. Panelists include Father John Crossin, OSFS, Paula Mineart, author, and Hedley Abernethy, of Catholic Relief Services — US Operations. The program is being sponsored by the Arlington Diocese Peace and Justice Commission.

Interpreters needed
The Hampton Roads office of Refugee and Immigration Services is seeking interpreter/translation volunteers who speak French and Spanish.
Volunteers must be be able to interpret rapidly and maintain confidentiality. In addition, volunteers should be willing to give approximately one to one and a half hours per appointment during business hours, Monday thru Friday, in the Newport News, Hampton, Smithfield, Williamsburg and Yorktown area.

School Gala
Peninsula Catholic High School in Newport News will hold a Spring Auction Gala, “Romance on the High Seas,” on Friday, Feb. 9, from 7 p.m. to midnight, at the school, 600 Harpersville Rd. Unique, one-of-a-kind items will be available for both the silent and live auctions. Heavy hors d’oeurvres, host bar, dancing under the stars and the Knights of Columbus Casino Parlor will be featured. Tickets are $30 per person and are available by contacting the PCHS Office of Advancement at 757–596–7247, ext. 12. Sponsorship opportunities are available. In addition, there is a $5,000 Raffle. Tickets are $50. Only 400 tickets will be sold. The winner will receive either a $5,000 tuition voucher or $5,000 cash. Tickets may be purchased using check, MasterCard or Visa.

Catholic speaker
Adam S. Miller, author of the book “Discovering a Lost Heritage: The Catholic Origins of America,” will speak at St. Joseph Church, 828 Buford Road, Richmond, on Sunday, February 11, following the 11:00 Mass. He will present little known facts about Catholic settlements in America prior to the Jamestown settlement in 1607.
Luncheon will be served prior to the talk followed by a Q & A session. A contribution of $3.50 for lunch and advance registration is requested. Life in the Spirit
A Life in the Spirit Seminar will start Monday, Feb. 12, at 7:30 P.M. at St. Edward’s Catholic Church, 10701 Huguenot Rd., Richmond. It will be presented by the People of Praise Charismatic Prayer Group for seven consecutive Monday nights (excluding March 12).
