Western Vicariate meets in Salem
Representatives of parishes in the diocese’s Western Vicariate meet Sept. 29 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Salem to share parish reports and work with their Local Planning Area groups to suggest ways of inter-parish collaboration. Here Msgr. J. Kenneth Rush, regional Vicar, speaks to the assembly. Later Joan Kennedy, a member of the Diocesan Pastoral Planning Commission, presented the diocese’s Strategic Pastoral Plan in a slide presentation and a new vision of Church moving from the “one priest, one parish” model. The five-year plan from 2008 to 2013 is currently in Phase One in which diocesan leaders seek to gather ideas from parish leaders to learn how to best distribute the priests and how parishes can work together most effectively. Many comments expressed concerns including the health of our priests, the challenge of the geography, Hispanic ministry, and regional coordination such as a New River Valley Catholic Youth Ministry.

Walsingham was to celebrate its 60th anniversary October 4–7 with events which included the annual golf tournament sponsored by the Booster Club to benefit athletics at Walsingham, and an Awards & Recognition dinner Saturday evening in which eight community members were recognized. Father Russell Smith, a 1972 graduate of Walsingham, was to celebrate Mass Sunday morning.

Monastic profession
Sisters Vicki Ix, OSB, left, and Veronica Joyner, OSB recently made the act of perpetual monastici profession with the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia. Sister Vicki is a native of Smoke Rise, NJ, and is currently vocation director for the community. Sister Veronica comes from Fredericksburg and is coordinator of St. Benedict monastery. Both sisters entered the community in 2002. During the profession ceremony both sisters were invited forward and were given a candle to remind them of their baptism into Christ while the Litany of the Saints was sung. Sisters Vicki and Veronica each read their statement of perpetual monastic profession, signed it on the scriptures and placed it on the altar. Following the profession, the two sisters sang the “Suscipe” (Receive me O God…) in dialogue with the community.

Hispanic heritage
Father James Gallagher, parochial vicar of Holy Cross, Lynchburg, poses with children whose parents are from Mexico, El Salvador, Peru and Puerto Rico in the church commons after Mass in Spanish Sept. 23. Parishioners were asked to use pins to designate their country of origin on a world map to illustrate the Hispanic community’s diversity. The Hispanic community of Holy Cross will have the closing celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month on Sunday, Oct. 14, when there will be an international Hispanic dinner to which parishioners are asked to bring a typical meal of their country. The celebration will also include a piñata, music and some tradional dances.
