John Elcesser, diocesan Superintendent of Catholic Schools, left, receives from Paul McFadden, a summary of the $3,000 in contributions given to Richmond Catholic schools from the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Major James Henry Dooley Division. The beneficiaries were St. Benedict School, $1,000, and St. Bridget’s, St. Edward-Epiphany, Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Mary’s Schools, each $500. Over the past three years, the Richmond Hibernians raised close to $9,000 from the annual “Trip for Two to Ireland” raffle and have given the proceeds to charities.

Students send supplies to new school in Pakistan
Children of St. John the Apostle School in Virginia Beach recently sent blackboards, white boards and many other school supplies to a new school in Nuristan, a province in Afghanistan near the Pakistani border which until now did not have a school. The area has no roads and is accessible only by helicopter. The student efforts were coordinated by school nurse Donna Lorge.
