Bridget Keeney, priest’s mother, dies in Salem

Bridget Eva Keeney, the mother of Father Timothy Keeney, pastor of St. Anne Church in Bristol, died suddenly Sept. 5 at her home in Salem. She was 69 and would have been 70 on Sept. 20.

In addition to her son, Mrs. Keeney is survived by her husband, Richard; two daughters, Kay Madden of Minneapolis, and Bridget Waterman of San Clemente, CA; another son, William Keeney of Richmond, and seven grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Sept. 8 at Our Lady of Nazareth Church in Roanoke where she and her husband were parishioners. Burial was at the mausoleum of St. Andrew’s Church in Roanoke.

John Elcesser, diocesan superintendent of schools, has been selected to receive the Bicentennial Medal from Mount St. Mary’s University of Emmitsburg, Md.

Mr. Elcesser was chosen among a group of individuals throughout the United States “whose work has characterized the University’s commitment for excellence in building communities in service to others.” The awards are being made in conjunction with Mount St. Mary’s Bicentennial.

“Your Bicentennial Medal recognizes you for your commitment to Catholic education through your service with the Mid-Atlantic Catholic School Consortium,” wrote Thomas Powell, University president, in a letter to Mr. Elcesser.

The award is to be presented on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the Summit on the Future of Catholic Schools at Mount St. Mary’s.

Clergy appointments

Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo has announced the following clergy appointments, effective immediately:

  • Rev. Edwin Montanez, priest ordained for the Diocese of Malaga-Soata, Colombia, to be parochial vicar at Church of the Incarnation, Charlottesville.

  • Rev. Mr. Mark Allison, permanent deacon, has been appointed Deacon Administrator of Church of the Transfiguration, Fincastle, and St. John, New Castle.

  • Rev. Mr. Joseph Grillo is appointed deacon at St. John the Apostle,Virginia Beach.

The award is to be presented on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the Summit on the Future of Catholic Schools at Mount St. Mary’s.

Knights of Columbus, Bishop Peter L. Ireton Council 6189, Richmond, won first place in the Family Support Activity category at the recent K of C National Convention in Nashville. Pictured above are Past Grand Knight Gene Zimmerman, left, and Frank Cuffe, coordinator of the project which received first place. In September 2006 members of Council 6189 had organized, prepared and served a picnic meal to more than 1,100 people representing the airmen, officers and their families of the 192nd Tactical Fighter Wing of the Virginia National Guard at their Sandston facility at Richmond International Airport. More than 68 Council members and their wives participated in preparations for the event and the event itself. “There were 13 members of the outfit who had served in Iraq and just returned and we wanted to do something to show support,” said George Cranford of the council.
