Haiti benefit

A recital to benefit Haiti will be held on Tuesday, June 19, at 7 P.M. at Church of the Redeemer, 8275 Meadowbridge Road. The duo consisting of Lisa Burrell (violin) and Linda Blondel (piano) will perform works by Schubert, Dvorak, Franck, and Piazzolla. The recital will also include a harp duet with Cindy Jennings, Minister of Music at Redeemer. The recital is free and open to the parish and public. Donations will be gratefully accepted to benefit teacher education at the school in Haiti that is associated with Association Femmes Actives Lascahobas, a women’s grassroots marketing organization with whom Redeemer is twinned.

Garage sale

St. Mark Catholic Church, 1505 Kempsville Rd., Virginia Beach, will have its 5th Annual Garage Sale on Saturday, June 23,from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Items for sale include clothing, toys, furniture, exercise equipment, household goods, baby items and much, much more. Food and drinks will be available. All proceeds from the sale will go to benefit the children of Maison Fortune orphanage in Haiti. St. Mark, along with several other local parishes, has a twinning relationship with Maison Fortune and works to provide the children and staff of the orphanage with basic life needs. St. Francis Home

Washington Revels, a group of five instrumental musicians, will give a concert for the residents of St. Francis Home, Richmond, on Sunday, June 24, at 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Hokie Night

Hokie Night, offered by Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish, Newport News, and Catholic Campus Ministry, is a time to share conversation, to offer support, to heal wounds, to move forward. Students, alumni, families and friends — anyone touched by the tragedy of April 16 — are invited to gather for informal conversation and light refreshment in the Commons following the 5 p.m. Mass at OLMC on Sunday, June 24.

Holy Hour for Vocations

St. Benedict Catholic Church in Richmond will have a Holy Hour for vocations on Monday, June 25,from 7 to 8 p.m. It will include praying the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary, Exposition and Benediction of the most Blessed Sacrament, and a reflection on Catholic Faith and Catholic Life by Deacon Keith Fournier. It will conclude with refreshments on the side porch of St. Benedict Catholic Church, 300 North Sheppard Street.

Art and theology

Father Mark Lane, Vicar for Clergy, will conduct a two-part program on theology and art “Light & Darkness: Sin & Grace — The Paintings of Caravaggio” at Church of the Epiphany in Richmond. Come explore Caravaggio’s innovative chiaroscuro to depict the tension of sin and grace in the portrayal of some of the greatest saints and sinners of the Church. Enigmatic, fascinating, scandalous and dangerous describe his life and his paintings equally. The seminar will be held at Epiphany, located at 11000 Smoketree Dr., with Part I on Wednesday, June 27,and Part II on Wednesday, August 22. Cost $15.00.
