On Thursday, March 8, the Virginia General Assembly passed a resolution honoring the late Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo, who passed away Aug. 17, 2017. Forty senators were patrons of the resolution titled, “Celebrating the life of the Most Reverend Francis X. DiLorenzo.”

The resolution noted, among other things, the bishop’s “humility, concern for the less fortunate, and emphasis on religious education.”

It further recognizes that under his leadership, “enrollment in the seminary more than doubled, and he ordained 18 priests; in 2014, he launched a capital campaign that raised more than $105 million to support parishes and clergy” in the Diocese of Richmond.

The resolution also acknowledged his formation of the McMahon Parater Foundation and its providing scholarships and financial assistance for those attending Catholic schools; the establishment of the Lay Ecclesial Ministry Institute; cofounding of the Virginia Catholic Conference; and his invitation to priests from Africa and Asia to minister in the Commonwealth.

Near its conclusion, the resolution noted “with great sadness the loss of the Most Reverend Francis X. DiLorenzo, a respected spiritual leader in Richmond.”
