Star of the Sea Catholic School located at the Virginia Beach oceanfront is pleased to announce that Carey Averill, M.Ed. has been appointed as principal.
Mrs. Averill’s career has been blessed with a variety experiences and opportunities that have taken her all over the world. She began her teaching career with the Department of Defense Dependent Schools teaching in Seoul, Korea, Schweinfurt, Germany, and Ft. Bragg, NC. She also taught for Cumberland County Schools in North Carolina and served as a crisis counselor in New York. Her most recent position was as the middle school mathematics teacher and STREAM Coordinator for St. John the Apostle Catholic School. Blessed with numerous military moves, she had opportunities to earn her certification in Gifted and Talented, Middle School Mathematics, and School Leadership. Mrs. Averill describes herself as a lifelong learner and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Purdue University, a Masters in School Counseling from Campbell University, and is currently working towards her doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from George Washington University.
Her passion and focus is STEM Education (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and wants to share her level of excitement and expertise with her faculty as well as with other schools within the diocese. Enhancing the educational and spiritual opportunities for all students is one of her goals. She views the contribution to the overall growth of such a remarkable Blue Ribbon School as an exciting opportunity and wants everyone to know what a unique and welcoming school Star of the Sea is.
Mrs. Averill and her husband, LTC (retired Army) Bryan Averill, reside in Virginia Beach with their two sons, Jacob and Sammy, and their dog, Finley. In her downtime, she cheers on her sons playing basketball, lacrosse, cross country and track. She loves to read, travel, and relax at the beach. With renovations happening at her school, she invites the community to come and see the amazing transformation.
