Joan M. Daniel, a longtime staffer for The Catholic Virginian, died on Friday, January 27, at the age of 81. Mrs. Daniel began working for the newspaper in August of 2001 as its archivist, then worked as a copy editor and proofreader until her retirement in December of 2014.
“Joan always spread good will for The Catholic Virginian by sending extra copies of the paper to parishes, schools and individuals who were featured in specific issues,” said Steve Neill, editor of the paper. “She will be remembered for her welcoming smile and generous spirit by those who knew her.”
In addition to her work at the newspaper, she volunteered for many years in the parish office of St. Benedict Church in Richmond. She was active in the parish’s senior group as well.
Survivors include her six children, 14 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, her brother and sister.
Visitation was held at the Bliley Funeral Home, 3801 Augusta Ave, Richmond, on Friday evening, February 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, February 11, at 11 a.m. at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, 300 North Sheppard Street, Richmond, followed by interment at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond.
